Compliance Institute Presidents: 2002 - 2022

DATE: 13 June 2022

The Compliance Institute was actively developed by volunteer members who made an outstanding contribution, taking time out of their busy schedules to progress this organisation into the Institute it is today. Even today, with our council, committees and working groups, this is still part of our ethos.

Compliance Institute has been led by 10 Presidents. In that time the profession has established itself, progressed through the Celtic Tiger, the global financial crisis, recovery, crises of culture with various scandals, and a global pandemic.

Each President has brought a different perspective, vision and objective and each time have asked the important question, how best can we serve the interest of our members and society.

As part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations, we spoke with the former presidents of the Institute about what the Institute means to them and any advice they would have for current or aspiring compliance professionals. Here is what they had to say:

Niall Gallagher | Compliance Institute President: 2002 - 2007

"The Compliance Institute has always been ahead of the times, with a flow of committed compliance professionals who serve the institute on a voluntary basis, bringing their practical and professional skills to the table."

Sean Wade | Compliance Institute President: 2008 - 2009

"I found my tribe with the Compliance Institute. I found people with the same vision, mission, values, strategy in our compliance and regulatory world, and I found that a great support."

Noel Moyhnihan | Compliance Institute President: 2009 - 2011

"Back in the early days, a number of workshops explored what success would look like for the ACOI.... The first was that candidates for employment would always be asked if they were members [of the Institute]. And if not, why not? Not only has this been achieved, but it has been surpassed. The question is now redundant because membership is now the first item on any compliance CV "

Aidan Conlon | Compliance Institute President: 2011 - 2012

"In my role today, I deal with regulators in 30 jurisdictions across the globe. I've seen the regulatory frameworks and principles are very similar across those countries. The compliance skillset and expertise of compliance Institute members is extremely portable, therefore it creates great opportunities for travel."

John Murphy | Compliance Institute President: 2012 - 2013

"As we look forward to the next 20 years, I'm sure that your role will continue to grow and evolve, you will be in high demand, but not just in risk management compliance, but in wider leadership roles in your organisation and the Institute will be there to support you."

Philip Brennan | Compliance Institute President: 2013 - 2015

"For anyone starting out in the compliance profession, spend time learning and understanding relevant law and regulation, be practical and solution minded and build your network within your business and within the compliance community. "

Clive Kelly | Compliance Institute President: 2017 - 2020

"As a profession, keep questioning. Keep asking those difficult questions. Many of our Compliance Professionals are seen as box-tickers, but we all know we are not box-tickers. Many of us got involved in this profession because we wanted to make our institutions better. Keep asking those questions. Keep ensuring that the value of the compliance profession is seen."

Kathy Jacobs | Compliance Institute President: 2020 - 2022

"To me, [Compliance Institute]  is a true community of experts with a passion for high standards, professionalism, and a mission to ensure that Irish public and society are well served by the organisations that we serve."

Diarmuid Whyte | Compliance Institute President: 2022 - Present

"I'm a huge believer in blazing your own trail; believing in yourself. Hard work will get you there. That's regardless of your age, your profile, or what your background is, the views and perspectives that you bring should be valued as it allows practices to be looked at through a different lens."
